MOTS-c (mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA type-c) is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded within mitochondrial DNA. Since its identification in 2015 it has become a focus of metabolic and ageing research, studied in cell and animal models of glucose metabolism, exercise physiology and mitochondrial signalling.
